The Best of My Grandmother's German Cookery:

One of the best German cookbooks written in English. The descriptions in this cookbook are very easy to understand and the recipes do not require an expert cook! The 14 chapters cover, using the right spices, spreads for sandwiches, salads, salads with cooked vegetables, soups, sauces, potatoes, breakfast foods, vegetables, meat dishes, chicken and fish, fruit salads, purees and other desserts, cakes, pastries, tortes and cookies. The index in the year 2000 edition is in English and German and that makes this cookbook very unique and a must have for every household! The Bi-lingual index is a great resource to find your long lost recipes. Written by germanmarketplace.com.

Grandmother Ida was born in the town of Breitungen, Germany, in the year 1906. Struggling against the harsh realities of living through both World Wars, Grandma had to work very hard to make a good home in which to raise her son, Hans (my father).

Times were lean, so Grandma had to find new and creative ways to put nourishing—yet inexpensive—meals on the table. While some of her ingredients were found growing in nature, most of them came from her own garden. I remember her taking me out into the forests and fields to teach me about the many different kinds of herbs used to bring out the natural flavor in our favorite dishes.

With both of my parents working, Grandma was the one mostly responsible for my upbringing. I frequently helped in the kitchen, gradually learning her simple approach to creating healthful, delicious, and easy-to-prepare meals. Today I'm very thankful for that opportunity. Because of years I spent in Grandma's kitchen, I'm now able to pass her recipes and techniques on to you.

This book provides a broad assortment of authentic German recipes perfected by my Grandmother Ida, and by her mother before her. They include a number of basic German dishes, many of which you may already be familiar. I think you will find them easy to prepare and delicious. I will also explain how to use a variety of kitchen herbs, all easy to grow in your own garden. And, finally, there is a "Grandma's Tip" added to each recipe to enhance your understanding of German food preparation techniques.

I hope you'll enjoy and treasure these recipes just as much as my friends, family, and I have. Happy cooking!
